Along what line should we divide - By Braimah Abdulrasak
By Braimah Abdulrasak (Lagos).
In recent history, there have been clamouring for division and breakup of the entity call Nigeria Why some are of the opinion that division and breakup is the only way out of this current state of quagmires such as the Indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB), others are of the opinion that restructuring is the answer to the apolitical and ethnic turmoil which has bedeviled the country.
However, one cannot fail to notice that the nation call Nigeria has been marred by continual lost of lives as a result of ethnics, tribal, Religion and Cultural violence One would be force to ask the question "Is there a way we can live together in peace as one Nigeria, in the face of this "multi-coloration challenges."
Nigeria as a nation is comprised of more that 300 ethnic and sub-ethnic groups and within these ethnic groups we have different spoken language groups with the same culture and way of life. These have made Nigeria one of the most cosmopolitant nation on earth. Aside being a multi-ethnic country, Nigeria is composing of different religions and beliefs. Although Islam and Christianity happen to be the dorminant and most pronounced religions we have other indigenous beliefs and some few religion that are less conspicuous such as the Grail message, Eckankah just to mention but few.
It is not a hidden truth that Nigerians themselves have become the bane of the problem. Having due to political differences created a very heated and tense atmosphere. We have due to our selfish reasons, or political difference fail to see the strength in our diversity.
The pages of history did not tell us that this geographical space called Nigeria have been an empty uninhabited land before the coming of the Europeans. We must understand that the people whose progenitors we are have always find away to live together undermining their language, cultural and tribal differences. Yes, they also had their challenges and problems, but they did not allow the flame of hate and ethnic bigotry to consume them.
If we must insist that this country be divided, "Along what line should we go about this division."
