CBN Go Against Proposal to Remove Arabic from Naira Notes

 The Central Bank of Nigeria has gone against a suit at the federal high court to remove the Ajami ( Arabic ) inscriptions on the naira note that it would cost the country a colossal sum of money to discard the existing naira note and print new ones without the Arabic inscription.

The Central Bank of Nigeria is said the is not a symbol or mark of Islam but an inscription to help non-English speakers who are illiterate in and use Ajami for trade.

The CBN made the submission in a counter-affidavit to a suit filed by a Lagos-based Lawyer, Chief Malcolm Omirhobo. The Lagos-based lawyer argued that the Arabic inscriptions on the naira notes portray Nigeria as an Islamic state, contrary to the country's constitutional status as a multi-religious state.

He stated that this violates sections 10and 55 of the constitution, which makes the country a multi-religious state.
