As the 2023 presidential election is 12 months away, some politicians have already thrown their hats in the ring to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.
While political parties are still planning and weighing their options ahead of the elections, campaign posters of some presidential aspirants have started littering the country already. So many of them are already all over the social and the mainstream media.
Nigerians have also been planning, Civil socieies have organizing towards the forth coming election.
In no particular order, here is a list of 12 aspirant that have made themselves available to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.
- Professor Chris Imumolen
Professor Christopher Imumolen, an educationist, has declared interest to contest the presidency in the 2023 general election.
Professor Imumolen who owns two universities in Africa, and several other institutions overseas made his intention to contest for presidency. He’s the founder of South America University, Delaware USA.
He also founded Global Wealth University, Togo, where he is the current Vice Chancellor. Other organisations he pioneer in Nigeria include Unic Foundation, Onshore-offshore Oil and Gas International and Joint Professional Training and Support Inc.
His organisations have impacted millions of Nigerians greatly. “Over the years, I have been able to support over 600,000 people with discounted and scholarship education, can you imagine what such a person will do if he becomes the President of the Nigeria,” he said.
While declaring his intention, Professor Imumolen said Nigeria deserves and truly wants a new form of leader.
He said the country wants a new breed of leadership that can take it to where it ought to be, noting that Nigeria has suffered immensely since 1960 as a nation.
Speaking on how he will revamp the economy, Professor Imumolen said the investment policies in the country need to be rejigged in order to attract investors. “We understand that many of the industry and the sector in Nigeria are being monopolised, so, one of the things we are going to do is to rejig the investment policies in Nigeria to encourage investors.
“The truth is that investors are the drivers of the economy, we now live in a country where even Nigerians are afraid to invest in the country because we have a very bad business environment for investment,” he noted.
Professor Imumolen has not declared his political party.
While being questioned in a press conference about the party where he would emerge, he said, “We are working with 6 political parties and when it’s time, we will announce. However, Nigerians need to believe in personalities rather than political parties. No political party can change a nation, people do”.
- Asiwaju Bola Tinubu
It is now crystal clear and iron clad that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is interested in succeeding President Muhammadu Buhari.
Tinubu officially threw his hat in the ring on Monday, January 10, 2022, when he told journalists that he has informed Buhari about his intention.
Meanwhile, a lot of Nigerians have been asking questions about two things that centred around “fitness” and age. Also, he will first have to face Party Primaries and if successful, then he will join the race fully.
- Alhaji Atiku Abubakar
It’s been speculated that the familiar face of the former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar will be vying for the 2023 presidency.
The Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is not new to the game, as he has contested for president five times without winning.
The next election provides the ex-vice president yet with another opportunity to try again, and if he eventually announces his interest in the race. However, he will first have to face Party Primaries and if successful, then he will join the race fully.
- Professor Kingsley Moghalu
Professor Moghalu has already restated his interest to lead the country to make Nigeria ‘the envy of other nations.’
Kingsley Moghalu was the presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the 2019 general election and has managed to remain politically relevant since he lost his first presidential race.
Having dumped the YPP for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in October 2021, the former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria is ready to join the race again in 2023.
- Chief Dele Momodu
The publisher of Ovation Magazine and The Boss Newspaper, Dele Momoduhas offered to lead the country.
The presidential candidate of the National Conscience Party (NCP) in the 2011 presidential election declared to run for president again on Monday, January 10, 2022.
The veteran publisher rejoined the PDP in October 2021, and he is ready to vie for the party’s presidential ticket in the upcoming elections.
- Bukola Saraki
Former President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki is one of the high-profile politicians who did not hesitate to make his intention known about 2023.
In November 2021, Saraki announced his intention to contest the presidency to PDP members in Benue State.
- Yule Edochie
Nollywood actor, Yul Edochie has reaffirmed his intentions to run for Nigerian Presidency in the forthcoming 2023 general elections.
He made this known in a post via his verified Facebook page on Friday, in response to a statement by fast-rising Nigerian Disk Jockey, DJ Big N.
The DJ had written, “What is going on?
14 months to yet another election and the youths still haven’t come forward with a representative. If the older politicians are proactive and already have candidates, then we need not complain with what we end up with.
Wake up Nigeria. Wake up.”
In response, Edochie said, “My dear brother @djbign I saw your post this morning about the youths not presenting a candidate yet.
“Thank you so much for your concern. My name is Yul Edochie and I’m running for President of Nigeria in 2023.
I declared my interest months ago.
“I humbly ask for your support. I believe that by posting me on your page, putting in a few words and supporting us through every other means at your disposal, our movement will gain more momentum, and certainly many others will join. Source.
- Aminu Tambuwal
It’s been rumoured that some PDP governors are working to hijack the party structure and they want Tambuwal to emerge as the party’s candidate in the next election.
Although the 56-yr-old former Speaker of the House of Reps is reportedly still consulting, what is clear as day is that the governor is low-key prepping himself for the office of the president.
- Khadija Okunnu-Lamidi
38-year-old female media entrepreneur, Mrs Khadija Okunnu-Lamidi, has declared her intention to seek a political party’s nomination to contest next year’s presidential election.
Okunnu-Lamidi, Founder, Slice Media Solutions, made the declaration while addressing newsmen in Lagos on Monday.
She declared that she had become the arrowhead for the intervention of her generation’s interests across the nation for politics and good governance.
“I seek to change the direction of our country, because time and chance will happen to all of us and the time for action is today.
“We need a better class and a better crop of leaders that are selfless, disciplined and bound with integrity, and above all, who love the country and are invested in her future.
“I am here to activate all people, the old, the poor, the rich; to unite around a common ideal on the basis of a consensus about a superior national development agenda,” she said.
According to Okunnu-Lamidi, her interests include 70 per cent youths who are often disenfranchised and have not taken their rightful place in choosing the government of Nigeria.
She expressed disappointment that Nigeria had missed important milestones in building the nation.
She said it was more pertinent that Nigerians must begin to think differently in the way things are done and the way they interact with each other.
She said: “We are all guilty for surrendering to temporary powerlessness, we can and must start to think differently.
“We sing often about our heroes past. These are people who entered the governance of Nigeria by design or by chance at very young age to take over from the colonial power that ruled Nigeria.
- Rochas Okorocha
The Nigeria Senator and former Governor of the Southeastern state of Imo, Rochas Okorocha officially declared his intention to run for the 2023 Presidential election, during the International conference center in Abuja on Monday.
Okorocha, who is the head of the All Progressive Congress (APC) party, will vie for the fourth time in 2023.
He is currently the senator of Imo West District in the 9th Senate.
The former governor reiterated his intentions to unite Nigerians across ethnic and religious divides if elected the president of the West African state.
"I appeal to my party the APC, they should allow a clear level ground. And Igbos must understand that power is not given, power is taken, we must go out to reach out to people and should speak and negotiate power because no one will give you power, but let justice reign.
When all this is done, ladies and gentlemen, as I declare to run for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria come 2023," declared Okorocha.
He has pledged to make free education compulsory, especially from primary to secondary schools and also create an enabling economy that will enable more job creation and better productivity.
"The problem is, for every 1 billion Naira problem, Nigeria has 10,000 Naira to solve. But what it requires now is that radical businessman who can turn nothing into something like I have done in my time (as former Governor of Imo state for 8 years), I would do that," Okorocha said.
- Orji Uzor Kalu
Chief Whip of the Senate, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu (APC-Abia), has called on the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to consider a Southeast candidate as its Presidential flagbearer ahead of its National Convention.
Kalu, a former Governor of Abia, made the call while speaking to newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday.
He said that as far as the party is zoning the presidential ticket to the south, south-east should take preference to anybody else that was trying to run.
On his ambition to run for president, Kalu said “I’m the most prepared presidential candidate in Nigeria. I’m capable health-wise, I’m capable to face anybody but our party, the APC, is supreme. I only wait for APC as a party”.
- David Umahi
The Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, has declared his intention to contest for president in 2023 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He made his intention public shortly after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday at the State House in Abuja.
This is coming a day after a former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, revealed his plan to run for the office on the ticket of the APC.
Mr Tinubu said, after meeting with Mr Buhari on Monday, that he would contest for the office of president.
Mr Umahi, in an interview with State House correspondents, said he has told the president about his ambition to contest for the seat if the party zones the ticket to the Southern region.
